Artex Ceiling & Full Room Plastering in Gosforth
A complete living-room transformation including layout alterations, fireplace boarding, ceiling overboarding, wall preparation, levelling and a full skim finish — completed in just 3 days.
A Room That Didn’t Work for the Customer
This Gosforth project was about much more than simply skimming four walls. The customer wanted the room to work better for everyday family life. An internal doorway leading into the hallway took up valuable wall space, while the existing fireplace opening dictated where the television could be positioned.
Because the room could also be accessed through the kitchen, the customer chose to close the hallway doorway. This created a much more useful wall for the sofa and improved the layout of the living space.
Creating a Better Space for the Sofa & TV
The redundant hallway doorway was blocked and boarded, creating a continuous wall and giving the customer the extra space they wanted for their sofa.
We also blocked and boarded the old fireplace opening, creating a clean, flat wall where the television could be positioned properly rather than sitting awkwardly in the corner of the room.
These relatively simple alterations completely changed how the room could be used before the plastering work even began.
Preparing the Existing Surfaces Properly
The existing walls and ceiling had a heavily textured Artex-style finish. Before work started, the coating was tested for asbestos and the test result confirmed that no asbestos was detected.
With that established, we could choose the right preparation method for the existing surfaces rather than taking chances with the background.
Encapsulating the Old Artex Ceiling
Rather than trying to follow the uneven existing ceiling, we overboarded it with plasterboard. This encapsulated the old textured finish and gave us a new, flat and stable background ready for skimming.
The aim wasn’t simply to make the ceiling smooth — it was to create a properly level surface that would look right once decorated.
Mechanical Bonding Before Plastering
The textured walls were prepared using a plasterer’s pre-grit bonding primer to create a strong mechanical key between the existing surface and the new plaster system.
This is a stage we don’t take chances with. Good plastering isn’t only about how the final skim looks — the preparation underneath matters just as much.
Where the existing surfaces were uneven, backing plaster was then used to straighten and level the walls before the finishing coat was applied.
Straight Walls, Sharp Corners & a Full Skim
New angle beads were fitted to the external corners to create sharp, straight edges. Once the preparation and levelling work was complete, the entire room — walls and ceiling — was skimmed to leave a smooth, flat, paint-ready finish.
A Completely Different Room in Just 3 Days
What started as a dated living space with textured surfaces, an unwanted doorway, an old fireplace opening and uneven backgrounds became a clean, modern room ready for decorating.
